A Mid-Century House, Ilkley

A bold yet timeless renovation for a mid-century house.

Mid-century houses have a character all of their own. Big windows, open space and simple architecture give you a great base to work from; with such a light and generous room, we could afford to go bolder with the cabinetry whilst keeping everything else relatively paired back.

The kitchen itself is a fairly straightforward layout, with a big island at the centre and a long run of cabinetry along the back wall. There’s plenty of storage, workspace and seating in the island, but importantly, still plenty of open space.

Finding the right shade was key — nothing too bright, but nothing too earthy either. Little Greene’s ā€˜Bassoon’ was a good middle ground. It has warmth and depth without dominating the room, particularly when paired with a neutral quartz worktop, bronze hardware and some lovely dark oak.

The oak dresser is a feature on its own. Finished in a dark oak wax and paired with glazed top cupboards to contrast the base cupboards painted in RAL ā€˜Black’, it brings a different texture to the dining end of the room; this mix of colours and textures softens the yellow and keeps the whole palette feeling balanced.

A fairly simple combination of bold colour, dark oak and neutral finishes — but one that works particularly well in a house like this. The yellow gives the kitchen its character, while everything around it keeps the space feeling warm, relaxed and uncomplicated.
